I have an Energy Intensive Industry (EII) exemption — what do I need to do?

If your business holds an Energy Intensive Industry (EII) exemption certificate, uploading it to your tem portal means we can apply your exemption to your bills — reducing certain non-power costs.

Do I qualify for an EII exemption?

EII exemptions are available to businesses in qualifying energy-intensive sectors where electricity costs make up a significant proportion of their overall costs. Eligibility is assessed and certificates are issued by the government — you'll need to apply directly through DESNZ (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero). For full eligibility criteria and how to apply, see the GOV.UK guidance on Energy Intensive Industries exemptions.

If you already have a certificate, follow the steps below to upload it.

How to upload your EII certificate

  1. Log in to the tem portal and go to the Account page

  2. Select the Exemptions tab

  3. Click EII exemption

  4. Find the relevant site and click Upload new document

  5. Upload your certificate (PDF) and click Submit

If the same certificate applies to all of your sites, tick Apply for all sites before submitting.

Once submitted, your certificate will show as In review. Processing typically takes up to one week. When our team has processed and accepted it, you'll receive a confirmation email — and your exemption will be applied to your bills going forward.

Your EII exemption page in the portal will then show:

  • Qualifying consumption (%) — the percentage of your energy consumption that qualifies for the exemption

  • Exemption start date — the date your exemption started, as declared on your certificate

  • Exemption end date — the date your exemption ends, as declared on your certificate

You can check these details at any time by going to the Exemptions tab and clicking EII exemption.

Certificate expiry

EII certificates are typically valid for one year. When your certificate expires, you'll see an Expired status in your portal. You can upload a renewed certificate at any time by returning to the EII exemption page and clicking Upload new document.
