What is kVA capacity and where can I find it?

kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is a measure of the maximum electrical demand your site can draw from the grid at any one time. We use it to calculate your capacity charges accurately — so it's important to provide the right figure before your first bill.

Where to find your kVA capacity

If you’re setting up a new account with RED, the easiest place to find your kVA capacity it is on a recent electricity bill from your previous supplier. Look for one of these labels in the charges breakdown:

  • Agreed capacity

  • Authorised supply capacity (ASC)

  • Maximum demand capacity

The figure will be shown in kVA. If you can't find it on a bill, your previous supplier or Distribution Network Operator (DNO) will be able to confirm it.

We'd recommend tracking down the correct figure from a previous bill if you can — an inaccurate value can mean your capacity charges aren't calculated correctly on your first bill.

How to add it in your customer portal

  1. Log in to the tem portal and go to the Account page

  2. Select the Management tab

  3. Click kVA capacity

  4. For each site, select I know the kVA capacity for this site and enter the value

  5. Click Submit

If you have multiple sites, each one is listed separately — enter the kVA figure for each site individually.

What happens after I submit?

Once you've submitted a kVA value, you can see it in your portal under the Management tab. When your DNO confirms your site's capacity, the value is updated and synced automatically.

If you believe the confirmed DNO value is incorrect, get in touch at [email protected] and we'll look into it.
